Prácticamente al mismo tiempo se inicia la enseñanza para tratar a este tipo de pacientes. Los métodos terapéuticos en ese entonces eran muy distintos a los que conocemos actualmente y no fue hasta finales del siglo XIX cuando se le da un carácter científico y se le integra como un problema de salud más. Es en este momento histórico cuando se encuentra el registro de la primera cátedra en forma sobre enfermedades mentales la cual impartía el Dr. Miguel Alvarado en el Hospital San Hipólito.
